About the Wellness Center
(Top)
St. Francis Cares Wellness Center and The Poverello Center are sponsored by St. Francis Chapel & City Ministry Center. The Wellness Center is open Tuesday - Thursday from 8:30 AM until 2:00 PM at 58 Weybosset, Street 2nd Floor in downtown Providence. The Poverello Center is open Tuesday - Thursday from 10:00 AM until 3:00 PM at 668 Hartford Avenue in Providence.
The St. Francis Cares Wellness Center was established in 1995 to meet the needs of all people to enjoy good physical health. The Wellness Center accomplishes this through educational activities on health, wellness, illness prevention, ongoing health screening services, and treatment referral and follow-up services. Programs and services are offered at the Center, located at 58 Weybosset Street in Providence, and at over 60 outreach sites throughout Rhode Island, and at the poverello center, 668 Hartford Avenue in Providence.
All programs and services at the Wellness Center are offered free of charge regardless of financial status or religious affiliation, but the focus is on the needs of elderly and low income individuals and families with little or no health insurance. Approximately 5,000 visits are made to the Wellness Center and at outreach sites annually.
Some of the services and programs offered through the St. Francis Cares Wellness Center include the following:
- Cholesterol Screening
- Glaucoma Screening
- Glucose Screening
- Hearing Tests
- Influenza Vaccinations
- Blood Pressure Screening
- Foot Care
- Osteoporosis Screening
- Tuberculosis Testing
- Smoking Cessation
- Pharmacist Consultations
- Healthy Eating
- Lung and Heart Health
- Coping With Pain
In addition, there is a Dental Screening and Referral service and a comprehensive Women's Health and Cancer Screening Program.
One of the most valuable "services" provided at the St. Francis Cares Wellness Center is the support and socialization opportunities for lonely and isolated elders. They spend time with the Center staff as well as other elders, and make connections that help keep them vital and involved in community activities.
There are 4 part-time, paid staff at the Center: a Ministry Director and 3 Nurses. The remaining "staff" consists of over 100 medical and non-medical volunteers. The testing and screening supplies and flu vaccine are extremely expensive, and they increase regularly.
The requests for the St. Francis Cares Wellness Center services also continue to increase. Your Free Will Offering will allow us to continue to respond to the need, as well as to provide support services for elders and others who do not have any natural supports in their lives.

Vitamins for Children
(Top)
Please help us provide vitamins for children. Research has suggested that improving nutrition positively affects school performance in children. In addition, in experiments where pupils receive vitamins and mineral supplements, test scores rose even higher.
Poor children's nutrition depends on charitable giving. You can help the children of the St. Francis Food Center have vitamins on a daily basis. Please consider contributing a new, sealed bottle of child and/or adult vitamins. We will distribute these vitamins to parents of young children and adolescents which are served through the Food Center. Drop off your vitamins at the Hospitality Desk.
